So a few of us tried to walk this 'red line' path thing (think "Freedom Trail") through the city last week, but didn't make it that far. Partly because it took us about an hour to find the giant red line outside the train station, and partly because the tourism office was closed (2pm on a Saturday... you'd think that'd be prime time to be open) and so we couldn't get an English translation of what we were looking at. Plus we didn't know how long the red line was (long, it turns out), and we didn't want to get stranded too far from somewhere we knew. Not that we could really get lost, being on the giant painted red line and all....
Ok, onto photos:
Me in front of the main train station. This is where the light rail (ie: MBTA) meets the distance trains (ie: Amtrak). Neat little subterrainian mall behind/below me, and a large pedestrian mall behind the camera.
The street in front of our hotel, taken from the light rail platform. We take these trains pretty much everywhere.
I didn't believe it myself until I saw it. Beer is actually cheaper than most drinks. It's not shown here, but it's almost always cheaper than (bottled) water. I kid you not. Good beer, too! None of this 'Budweiser' crap. There aren't many varieties, but they're all delicious and dirt cheap. And people drink it all the time. All the time.
I think this is the operahouse (it was on the red line, so we could only guess what the German meant).
Memorial to all the Jews killed by the Nazis during WWII from Hannover (I think... I saw a few key words in the German inscription and guessed the rest). It didn't really hit me that I was in Germany until I saw this.
